Power of Attorney (POA) is a national organization is a national organization working to create a more diverse and effective environment through which business lawyers are able to provide pro bono legal services to nonprofits and other community groups across the United States.
POA's network helps groups in the field share information and attract additional support. POA's advocacy promotes greater pro bono involvement by business lawyers, and within the nonprofit sector for better management with the assistance of pro bono legal services.Mission
Nonprofit groups in the U.S. are facing an increasingly complex operating environment, increased regulation, and the need to adopt more sophisti-cated business practices in fulfilling their missions. Many of these organiza-tions could benefit tremendously from outside professional help, but they can't afford to purchase such services in the marketplace. So they go without, often wasting time and resources as a result. At the same time, business law firms - including many national and inter-national firms and in-house corporate lawyers - are seeking opportunities in pro bono business law in order to have a positive impact on the communities where they live and work. POA identifies prospective sites around the country where programs have been established and where expansion of service is feasible. It provides seed funding to facilitate expansion as it works with local business leaders and nonprofit organizations to develop new strategies to meet local needs. OA works with pro bono programs to: Better understand the legal and business problems nonprofit groups face, and develop the core legal expertise and capacities needed to address these problems on a meaningful scale; Enhance the profile of these organizations in the community, so that worthwhile groups will be aware of their services and community leaders will better understand their impact; and Strengthen relationships with other technical assistance providers to establish referral groups that bring together a wider range of management services and a team approach to problem-solving.
